Situated on the slopes of Mount Ammomahi, at an altitude of 550 meters, it is one of the island’s most authentic destinations. Argokili is known for the pilgrimage to Panagia Argokiliotissa, which attracts many devotees each year, especially on the first Friday after Easter. The procession and religious services create an atmosphere of reverence and faith.
The history of Argokili dates back to antiquity, with the area being linked to the icon of the Virgin Mary, which was discovered in 1835 at the site called “Tholos.” Since then, the icon has been a point of worship, and in 1930 it was relocated to the monastery built on the site, drawing pilgrims from across the island and beyond. The current church, built in 1851, is an imposing structure covering an area of about 25 acres.
